New Somalia Country Page and Land Sector Snapshot
Arab Land Initiative is pleased to share our new Somalia country page, along with a newly published Land Sector Snapshot. Each contains an overview of Somalia’s land sector, including the legal and institutional framework, information on land tenure, land value, land use, land development and land dispute resolution, along with sections on the housing, land and property rights of displaced people, recommendations based on the work of UN-Habitat and partners and key UN-Habitat interventions in Somalia. On the country page you can also find a curated library of other informative land-related publications.
Somalia has experienced decades of political fragility, insecurity and economic crisis, and it currently stands at a critical juncture between stabilization and development. The ownership and control of land and land-based resources – including water, agricultural and grazing lands, forests and minerals – have been central features in Somalia’s civil conflict, and a source of violence between competing groups even prior to the conflict. This calls for increased attention to address the dysfunctionalities of the Somali land governance and land administration system.
