The Global Land Forum 2022, Jordan

The Global Land Forum (GLF) is an opportunity for the global land community to discuss the roadmap for  achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and put in place strategies and tools needed to overcome inequality, build democratic and sustainable food systems, and achieve  good land governance in the Arab region and others. Food and water resources in the Arab region have been facing continuous challenges causing serious humanitarian crises for its population, livelihood and biodiversity – with women and youth among the most affected categories due to their social vulnerability and unsecured land rights.

The Forum will be conducted in two parts, with the Global Land Forum – Youth running from 21-23 May and the main forum from 23-26 May 2022. The Forum themes are timely and relevant to the priorities of UN-Habitat and of Global Land Tool Network (GLTN in the Arab region and beyond, thus, the forum presents an opportunity for to showcase some of the most recent pieces of research and analysis conducted by the Arab Land Initiative and by GLTN.

The partners of UN-Habitat, GLTN, Arab Land Initiative and GLII will make key contributions in various sessions:

Monday May 23 – Day 1

08:45 – 11:45 – Data and Evidence in the GLF- Youth forum. The session will introduce youth participants to existing data tools and monitoring initiatives that have been developed and being implemented by various organizations and which can be used to hold governments and companies accountable and to enhance generation and uptake of land governance data to inform and promote multi-level good land governance policies and practices.

14:35 – 16:00 – Plenary session on: People-Centered Land Governance for Peacebuilding and Sustainability in the Arab Region. The Arab Land Initiative Partner Arab Group for the Protection of Nature (APN) will be in the panel of the roundtable discussion. The debate will be around the accelerating crises in the region that affects economic, food, water and how Arab integration can help in addressing all of them.

16:30 – 17:15 Plenary session – The day will conclude with a session moderated the Arab Land Initiative’s Senior Advisor.

Tuesday May 24^th – Day 2

11.45 – 12.30 At the Booth-Fair ideas on: Women, Land and Peace. A 15mn intervention will be emphasising on, why it is important to increase women’s housing, land and property rights in fragile and conflict-affected contexts. Also, how to increase and empower women’s participation in land management and housing, land and property right’s processes. As Conclusion, we shall be presenting the role of the Social Tenure Domaine Model in contributing to safeguarding the HLP rights of displaced women and men.

14:00 – 15:00 – Breakout session on: Secure Access to Land for Preventing and Solving Conflicts. UN-Habitat / GLTN will be part of the panel discussion and will reflect on the key trends, challenges and good practices related to land and conflict in the Arab region, building on recent researched carried out in partnership with the Arab Group for the Protection of Nature and other field assessments undertaken in Arab countries.

14:00 – 15:00 – Breakout session on: Global and Regional Land Governance Frameworks. The session will take stock of the implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests, 10 years since their endorsement. The report on the Evaluation of Land Policies in Africa, developed with the contribution of UN-Habitat and GLTN will be launched.

15:45 – 17:00 – Breakout session on: Transforming Gender Relations for More Equitable Land Rights. In the panel discussion, UN-Habitat / GLTN will present an analysis of the trends regarding women’s access to land in the Arab region and the lessons learnt towards securing gender equity in land rights for a just and sustainable world.

Wednesday May 25^th – Day 3

14:00 – 15:15 – Breakout session on:  Land Data for the SDGs and Accountability; What has been Achieved and Where Do We Go from Here. GLTN and GLII will be represented in a session where panelists will present the status of key SDG land indicators and ongoing monitoring initiatives, reflecting on how they can increase uptake of these indicators, leverage diverse data for impact, and solicit further commitments from policy makers.

Thursday May 26^th – Day 4

9:20 – 10:30 – Plenary session on: Secure Land Rights for Equitable Just and Peaceful Societies. UN- Habitat and the Global Land Tool Network have done a lot of field work and analysis on land and conflict globally. UN-Habitat has many land-related projects in the Arab region and in the last two-three years, the Arab Land Initiative has undertaken few key pieces of research on land and conflict in collaboration with local researchers and practitioners. In the panel session, UN-Habitat / GLTN will reflect on the articulation of the relation between land and conflicts in the Arab region, the key trends and the possible land solutions for a more equitable, just and peaceful Arab region.
